Do you find yourself buying a whole lot of books and courses guaranteed to change your life!?  To make it better than it is with very little effort on your part?  Well, I use to buy all kinds of courses and books and packets that were suppose to make me a better person, make me thin, make me rich, overall likeable by everyone, etc.

I spent hundreds of dollars a month on some “Get Rich” courses, self-improvement books, weight loss programs that were suppose to help me get fit.  You name it, I probably bought it.

What was I thinking?  I was thinking I wanted to change my life.  Probably like you, I was looking for something that would make me step to the next level, help me to realize my dreams, be a better person, make a better life for myself.

So, I bought all these things and guess what happened, not much….  If I did something with them I would read them and find something in them that I just couldn’t do.  They want me to sell their stuff?  I’m not a salesman.  Plus, I found out that they sold the same deal to my neighbor and his neighbor and his neighbor, etc. on down the block and throughout the whole town.  How can I sell something that everyone already has and has as much interested in buying, now, as I do in selling it?  Because they are selling it as well?!   It becomes a real problem when I realize it’s not a saleable item.  But, for the original seller it was a multi-million dollar idea!

I bought into the “Change my Life for me” deal too many times.

Are you doing the same thing?

What can we do to stop it?

Well, I finally, after years and years of self discovery and thinking, and self recriminations,  in other words, berating myself for buying the crap in the first place,  I finally realized what the problem is.  It boils down to just one thing.  It can be said a bunch of different ways.  In fact I’m sure you’ve heard it before and may even have realized the same thing.  But, didn’t act on it.

Basically, it boils down that I already have the information I need.  I know what I need to do to get rich.  I know what I need to do to lose weight.  I know what I need to do to be a better person.  Do I need yet another course, or program, that is going to tell me how someone else did it?  And, just because they did it doesn’t mean I can duplicate their efforts.  I’m sure I can sabotage the whole deal somehow and make it look like they don’t know what their doing.  After all, I already have all the information I need.  I already know the stuff that the “Experts” are telling me.  I can easily turn it around and make it look like their coaching doesn’t work.  I’ve done it a lot in the past.  Buying a course that doesn’t work is easy.

So, what do I do about it?  Well, since I already know everything, at least as far as these experts are trying to feed me.  I know how I can get rich.  I know how I can lose weight.  I know how I can get the girl, be the man, win friends, influence people.  I already have the knowledge, or at least….it’s at my fingertips.  And guess what?!

IT’S FREE!  That’s right.  If I’m missing any knowledge I think I need I can get it and I don’t have to pay a supposed expert on the topic some wallet-breaking amount of money to get it.

Some of the things I’ve purchased have been ridiculous!  For example I subscribed to a stock service for $300.  I had a membership for 3 years.  They gave examples of all these great stocks they picked that would have made me a fortune!  Had I just purchased $5000 worth of shares when they recommended them.  Well, after I was a member and could look over their site it didn’t take me long to realize that they recommended about 2 or 3 stocks a week.  And guess what….  Most of them were losers….  I emailed them and asked what’s the deal?!  I was told, “Well the market is in a bad turn right now, but we expect it to turn around within the next few months.”  That was a year ago.  The market still hasn’t turned around.  The thing that really fired by up about this, was the fact that if I took their recommendations I would be broke in no time.  How could I put $5,000 on every stock they recommended?  Especially since most, pretty much all of them then, were losers.

I would literally lose my shirt.  I didn’t quite realize that I knew everything then….  But I was getting closer.  All the knowledge they gave on the site was stuff that I had paid good money for.  And yet, all of it was available to me in knowledge that I already possessed, or could get for ABSOLUTELY FREE!

You got it, the information was absolutely free!  Why did I pay that money in the first place?  Because I believed their propaganda, that their information would make me rich.  That they had something I didn’t know, and needed in order to succeed.  I believed their lying.  Ok, so they didn’t lie.  That one or two stocks they had recommended back in 1982 had gone through the roof….

But, did I need to spend the $300 in order to figure that out?   I guess I did.  It was worth $300 just to learn a lesson.  But wait, that was a lesson that I had learned years before with an investing newsletter that I had paid $30 a month for a subscription.  And found out I didn’t have the billions of dollars to invest in every one of their recommendations, none of which the newsletter writers were investing in themselves, by the way.

And then there was the other time, with another package I had purchased that would teach me how to “Trade like a bookie”.  I found it extremely complicated.  But, if I really wanted to trade like a bookie I would sit down and study it.  Oh, I didn’t want to take the time for that?  Guess what?  They have a training course to can take where the Guru that wrote the course will train you personally.  You and 100 other people willing to pay the $6000.00 for the privilege to attend.  How many of those 100 people are actually trading like a bookie today….  Maybe 1? Or 2?  If we’re lucky.  Why is that?  Because it was all information that was readily available, for free, or the people already knew it, but were not using it.  So they felt that they needed to be taught again.  And again.  A few of the people finally got it and made the knowledge their own.

I figure it’s my inane thinking that someone out there knows more than me.  Why?  Because he says he’s the expert.  And I believe that.  I deserved to pay the money for that false belief in them and for the lack of belief and faith in myself.

If I truly believed in myself I wouldn’t give someone all my money, the money I need to seed my next million dollar idea.  If I truly believed myself I would take advantage of the truly free information out there, that’s just as good, if not better than anything the experts are spouting.  Where do you think they got their information in the first place?  From the free areas, of course.

I find it truly amazing sometimes when I find someone selling something, lately it’s been some form of e-book, that is easily downloaded for free somewhere else.  The person selling it just repackaged a book, where the copyright had expired, and then is selling it as though they are the only place where this information can be found.  Once a copyright expires it’s pretty much available for anyone, for free.  If I repackage it, put my name all over it, then I can charge, but I’m charging for my repackaging and name, not for the book.  Amazing don’t you think?  I kick myself because I’ve fallen for this one, too.

What can I do to convince you to stop buying other people’s junk?  Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of sites that are trying to sell you the knowledge you need in order to build a website and open your own business.  You don’t even need a product!  You can sell their product, which is telling other people how to build a web site and open their own business and sell the original product, etc.  You can see where this is going.  Is this information unique?  Can I get it anywhere else?  YES!  You can, I can, anyone can.  The information on how to build a web site, how to open your own virtual business is available, for FREE!

Stop buying every great idea you see online or on TV, or in the stores.  Always ask yourself if it’s a need or a desire.  If it’s something you really need then by all means buy it.  If it’s something you just want, then you have to decide how important it is.

I have a potato chip weakness.  I admit it.  Do I really have to get two bags of Doritos because there’s a dollar off if you buy 2 bags?  Come to think of it, do I even need the 1st bag?  No, but I want it.  Why do I want it?  I eat them and like them, but they ultimately don’t make me feel very good.

That’s what most of the stuff you see, the get rich quick courses, the weight loss courses, the be a better person courses, are all about.  You feel great buying them, but afterwards you begin to wonder if you made such a great decision buying it.  Is it really knowledge that I needed so badly?  Is it knowledge that I couldn’t get anywhere else?

In the rest of this ebook, I’m going to talk about some of the ways this information is free.  I hope I won’t offend anyone in this.  Hopefully, I haven’t offended anyone with what I have already said.  I just want you to know that I have no wish to offend anyone.  My only desire is to help others, as much as I’ve been helped and have helped myself.  I’ve very grateful for all the help I have received and think it’s only fitting to give to others as I receive.  Please take what I say in this spirit.

Ok, let’s get to it.

My favorite Free Place

Everyone knows about this spot.  It’s my favorite place for free stuff.  It’s not free for the taking, but almost.  You can practically get any knowledge you want from this place, and I mean any knowledge.  Think of something and I’ll bet they’ll have something that will cover the topic in this location.

Can you guess what the place is?

Ok, you guessed it.  The local Library.  Which only proves that you have all the knowledge you need to succeed.  Is the library a secret that no one knows about? Did you have to read this page in order to learn that there’s a library, or a place, where you can go and borrow just about any book, or DVD, on any topic you can possibly think of?

I think it’s amazing how few people take advantage of the library system.  I’ve actually added the local library to my “Places to Donate” list, because of the wonderful product and services they offer.  Libraries are always struggling for money.  They make their products available for free, so what do you expect?  I would think a nominal membership fee would even be acceptable for the service they offer.   But they don’t.  They continue to give memberships to the library away for free.

Did you know about the library?  Do you ever go to the library?  Did you know that most libraries are online.  You don’t even have to go to the library to look at what is on their shelves.  You can search on any topic at their web site and it will give you a long list of books, DVD’s, whatever they have available.  From there you can put a hold on the book of your choice.  If someone has it checked out already you’ll be put in the waiting list to receive the book as soon as it is available.  How many “Get Rich Quick!” books are sitting in the library, waiting to be checked out, for FREE?  I’m sure there’s a lot.  I’ve checked them out before so I know that they are there.  How many diet books do you think are at the library?  Oh, but the latest diet book are the only ones that will do.  Well, the library probably has it.  They usually have all of the best sellers, in fact multiple copies so the waiting list isn’t so long.  Get it while it’s hot!

Is there any reason to purchase then “Learn how to build your own Internet Business” course offered on the internet for a new “LOW” price of just $99.99?  The library has tons of books, videos, etc. that will teach you everything you want to know about building a business online.  You wouldn’t believe it!  Unless you’ve been there and checked them out.

If you have then you’re probably as amazed as I was about why doesn’t everyone go to the library?  How hard would it be for the library to get funding if everyone used them.  I would think they would get all the funding they needed if they were in a higher demand.  As it is there are only a few that take advantage of this great service.

I discovered another great thing about the library system lately.  You know the hit movies that you want to watch, after they come out on DVD.  These same hits will often times show up at the library available for checkout.  At my library I can check out a blockbuster movie, in the form of a DVD, for a whole week.  And, once again, just in case you missed my saying this before, it’s absolutely free….as long as I return it on the day it’s due.  Otherwise I get charged 25 cents a day.  Even if I forget for a few days that’s still cheaper than renting it somewhere.  Can you see the power in this?

Let’s say, for argument’s sake, that there is some knowledge you don’t have, that you really really want.  Is it about real-estate?  Well, instead of buying this course for thousands of dollars you can check it out for free at the library.  There are at least a ton of books and DVDs on real estate in the library.  I know, I’ve checked out a number of them.

Is there any reason to purchase any kind of information?  Information is free!  Stop buying it!  Please!  Save your money for the truly important things in life.  Like your family, your home.  Take that extra $200 you send on “Get rich quick” courses every month and put it extra on your mortgage so you can pay your house off quicker.  I know, your accountant will tell you not to do this so you can write off the interest….

I’d rather have the money and not pay the interest than be able to write off a smaller amount on my taxes.  Thank you.  Sorry, about that, that’s a topic for a whole different discussion.  The library is full of books that cover this topic better.

Granted, the library may not have the latest when it comes to DVD’s, but it’s been in my experience that they will have them listed before they are actually released, so you can add yourself in the queue for checkout before the library even receives it.  I’ve been first in line because I added myself to the holds list soon after it was listed in the library system.  I can usually pick it up a few days after the DVD is released.   Why a few days?  Well, they have to have time to add the DVD to the system.

You may be thinking, but I like to watch the DVD’s as soon as they come out, so I have to subscribe to the movie service so I can get exactly what I want, when I want it.  Ok, if that’s the way you want it.  You can pay for something that’s absolutely free, or you can get it absolutely free.  It’s always your choice.  I can’t force you to take advantage of the free system.  But, that $20.00 a month you’re spending on those movies is $20.00 a month I’m using somewhere else, and still getting my movies, with the delay.  What I’ve found is my family is so busy that sometimes it’s hard to sit down and watch a movie, so we return it unwatched and have to check it out again later.  If I do this it doesn’t cost anything.  If you do that it still costs you.

All I’m trying to do is open your mind to the limitless possibilities that the information you seek is easily obtained, and not by giving away an arm and a leg to obtain it, or your hard-earned money for that matter.  It’s usually free and easy to get.  Everything from weight loss to self improvement.

INFORMATION IS EVERYWHERE

So often we see the people selling the information trying to make it look scarce, or that you have to act now or the information will go away, or the information is so cheap it will never be any cheaper.  Nothing can be further from the truth.  An excellent example of this is the “Think and Grow Rich” book by Napolean Hill.  This book is way past it’s copyright and is free for the reading.  If a publisher decides to bundle it up in a new book, then they can sell it as their discretion.  But, you don’t have to buy it in that form.  I’ve found numerous places on the internet that give this book away for free.   I’ve also found a lot of places that will pretend that they are the only ones who have the book and want to sell you the latest copy.  Don’t fall for it.  All it takes is a little looking around and finding the free version.

Also, the library carries this book.  So, there’s really no reason to purchase it unless you just have to have a personal copy.  I can certainly understand that.

The library is not the only resource for free stuff!  The internet is filled with free stuff.

A good example.  I was looking at an e-book that is being sold on eBay and around the internet called “Auction Thief”.  I noticed that not only do you buy the rights to read it when you purchase, but you also buy the right to resell the book.  This for me always raises alarm bells.  If they are giving away the resell rights then that pretty much automatically sets it up for getting it for free.  This is the same thing as selling it to you, your neighbor, his neighbor, etc, on down the block and through the city.  Everyone will want to sell it.  Eventually someone will get mad and put it out there for everyone to look at.  Sure enough it only took me about 5 minutes of searching in Google and I found the full book, free, for my review.  I also found that the wording in the advertising for this e-book was totally false.  They say that they make money off of your auctions and you can’t help it, or do anything about it, as though they are taking money from you.  It’s so blatantly wrong.  Anyway, that’s a different matter.  I really think truth in advertising should be enforced, but that’s just me.

If this doesn’t convince you, then I’m not sure what will.

Scientists are finding out that the universe works a lot differently than they had originally thought.  As they drill down to the basics of what everything is made of, they are finding that everything is made of information.  It’s not really matter, or something solid and unchangeable.  It’s information.  In other words, information is all around us.  And it’s like air.  You can’t be charged for getting your fair share.

So before you buy anything, information wise, please do a little searching for the free version.

A GREAT! and valid example of something free that everyone else is paying for....

Just the other day I was looking at an e-book on eBay.  They were selling it for 50 cents + free shipping.  Along with the e-book, which they email you after you win the auction, you also get rights to resell the e-book on your own.  Nice....  Or, so you might think.  I think this is one of those great examples as I spoke about above.  Something where you are selling it, oh, and your neighbor is selling it, and his neighbor on down the street and through the city.

Anyway, I knew, as soon as I saw the resell rights, that I could get this e-book absolutely free.  No problems.  And I wouldn't even have to pay for 50 cents for it.  The thing that got me curious about it was it said it was stealing money from me every time I put up an auction.  I didn't believe it.  I knew it was a lie, a sales gimmick, so I had to get the book and check out what they are really saying as opposed to a lie that is going to get people to pay the money.

It took me all of 5 minutes to find the e-book out on the web, entirely free for download.  Yep, you read that correctly.  I suppose if I had wanted to save myself 5 minutes I could have paid the 50 cents.  But, then I couldn't say I got it free, so I couldn't do that.  :)

According to the e-book the money wasn't coming from me at all, so it really was a lie.  Just a sales gimmick.  Ok, so I knew it already.

This is a great example of something that appears to cost money (information) but is had for the taking in some other location.  I guess the cost is that you have to ask, you have to look, you have to seek the answers a little bit.  But, still, don't pay the money.  I also saw this same ebook selling in other locations for a lot more, up to $20.00.  Wow, wouldn't I feel silly if I had paid $20.00 for it then saw it on eBay for 50 cents.....

Am I saying you shouldn't buy information?

Not at all, believe it or not.  I'm not saying you should never pay for information.  I don't want to give you the wrong idea.  What I'm saying is you should do your due diligence and look at all your resources to make sure, absolutely sure, that there's no other place to get the information.  As the site says, I believe all information is free, but timing is everything.  Maybe you can't find something that you think you need in the time allotted and you think you need to buy it.  Then, by all means do so.  I mean, I can't say I never buy something that I think I need, when I need it.  Sometimes there is information that is necessary for your learning process and paying for it is a good thing.  Just make sure you can't get it anywhere else before you do so.  I got sick of doing just that myself.  Paying for something and then later realizing that I could have gotten it absolutely free.  I could have checked it out at the library, or downloaded it free on the internet, etc.

I guess it's just like everything else.  Do your homework first so you're prepared when the test comes.  Make sure there's no other options before you stake your claim.
